Project Insights: Michigan State University Munn Ice Arena

Munn Ice Arena renovations give Spartan Hockey a world-class arena with the help of Hollman Lockers

Home of Michigan State University’s Spartan Hockey team, Munn Ice Arena, has completed its largest renovation to date. After breaking ground in 2019, the renovation was halted due to the pandemic, now four years later, the hockey facility has gotten its much needed facelift.

When it came to the locker room renovations for the Spartans, one of the primary drives of the restoration was to create a space for the players to bond and to promote fellowship. Not only was space within the locker room necessary, but the lockers themselves needed to handle the large and heavy equipment involved with hockey.

Hollman came into the picture, presenting a locker that was designed for MSU based on current player habits and needs. Having the locker room located in an ice arena, it was important to ensure the lockers were durable against the environment. The main component of the lockers were created with black Phenolic, a notoriously durable and water-resistant material; while the integrated benches were made with marine-grade vinyl cushions constructed to withstand water. Using these products will guarantee the lockers stay pristine even with heavy use.

Along with durability, the lockers were strategically designed to shelf and hang the necessary pieces of gear without overloading the unit. In general, hockey requires a lot of gear for protective purposes, meaning the design needed to be able to categorize a large volume.

Each locker includes three tiers of shelving made to hold helmets, all pads, gloves, and personal items. Below each integrated seat is a lift-up piece for additional storage. One of the unique features of the model is the face-mounted custom skate hooks placed on the lower portion of the locker, designed to keep skates obscured and localized in front of the lower ventilation system to help reduce dry time and bacterial growth.

“The thought process to have a changing area where each guy has their own space to put their stuff in so we can keep our locker room orderly, and that’s one thing we talked about as a group. Its super important to us to be a steward of that space…we can say thank you but I think the way you take care of it is the best way to show you appreciate it so that place is going be spotless”, Adam Nightingale, MSU Hockey Head Coach.

Renovations to Munn Ice Arena were completed this past September, just in time for the Spartan’s regular season. With the facility’s upgrades and the help of Hollman, alums and players are sure to be proud for years to come.

Project Insights | University of Maryland Football Locker Room

University of Maryland’s new football facility is transformational for players with renovations from Hollman Athletic lockers.

After years of planning and building, the University of Maryland unveiled Jones-Hill House, a brand-new facility that will home their football program. With a revamp in mind, Hollman Inc. became involved to create an eye-catching locker room to complement the other remodels.

The University of Maryland’s goals with the renovations were to improve the program’s ability to develop a student-athlete experience and attract recruits. Hollman’s engineering and research and development teams got creative by designing a locker that emphasized storage, ventilation, and representation of the great state of Maryland.

The lockers are comprised of hybrid materials with a solid surface, Nanolam, the latest micro-technology lamination whose super-opaque surface has a velvet, soft-to-the-touch finish. Each locker included powder-coated, stainless-steel edging and additional phenolic and acrylic finishes. Above all, the real attraction is the high degree of personalization and branding that went into each locker and cubby.

The new lockers each include custom, backlit nameplates with each player’s head shots, position, and hometown. All include lower ventilated deck pullout drawers with a custom monochrome facsimile of the state flag of Maryland, embossed on a perforated metal grill.

In addition to the lockers, each of the 126 cubbies featured an overstuffed custom leather Captain’s Chair, embossed with Maryland’s classic M Bar logo, capable of fully reclining. The recliners also featured full power outlets, USB charging stations, and Digilock, a secure and lockable storage area with vertically recessed interior lighting.

“This is the standard for Maryland,” University of Maryland’s Damon Evans exclaims, “This is the standard that we have to set when we build facilities here for our student-athletes. We talk about inspiring Maryland pride. This inspires pride”.

Hollman completed the University of Maryland locker room renovation and installation in conjunction with local women-owned business enterprises, who sourced 10% of all materials, goods, and services to benefit the immediate community.

With renovations being complete, the Terrapins were ready for their upcoming season and, with the help of Hollman, had the perfect locker room for it.

Project Insight | The Bar Method

Learn about how Hollman, Inc. helped The Bar Method design their first Texas-based studio.

A renowned barre studio since 2001, The Bar Method (TBM), made its way into the Park Cities – Dallas scene in 2011. TBM workout incorporates Pilates, yoga, and various strength training methods into a ballet-inspired workout, all backed by physical therapy. Don’t worry, a dance background isn’t necessary for this workout!

We got together with Crystal Cavender, a six-year studio manager and teacher of the Park Cities location. As the first location of TBM in Texas, the studio wanted to make a lasting impression on its newest members. Hollman was contacted to help create a locker layout suitable for TBM’s vision and to help with membership loyalty and satisfaction.

TBM chose a triple-tier Model C locker in Designer White, complimenting their sleek studio layout. “Our customers love the added amenity at our studio. Being able to come in and safely put their things in a room, lock it up, and head to class knowing their things are there when they finish was so important to us”, Cavender explains.

Our laminate lockers are functional and designed to last. TBM still has their original lockers from 2011, Crystal states [the lockers are] “extremely durable and still beautiful, anytime we need service Hollman is just an email or call away, and they’re on it,” justifying that overtime Hollman lockers are capable of withstanding high-traffic and heavy use from members.

Since the initial Texas launch, The Bar Method has expanded across Texas and the nation. To learn more about The Bar Method check out their site.

                          Project Insights | SESSION Pilates

Inside Hollman’s locker project with Dallas’ up-and-coming Pilates studio.

In 2016, Brittany Grignon brought her dreams to life when she opened her first Pilates studio in the heart of downtown Dallas. Grignon’s studio, SESSION Pilates, is based around an upbeat 50-minute workout designed to sharpen and tone your physique through a full mind and body workout.

Fast forward 6 years, SESSION Pilates has become an extremely successful studio in the Dallas area, growing to four locations. Being a new owner in the fitness industry, Brittany turned to Hollman to get guidance on the best locker fit.

With a brand-new studio being designed, a budget-friendly locker was ideal for this new gym owner. “When it comes to building and starting a new business, all of it is already stressful so having something that I could check off the list that I knew I didn’t have to worry about was actually very reassuring”, says Grignon. Hollman had the solution with the Essentials Collection, curated to be cost-effective, durable, and easy to order with a 4-6 week turn-around on lockers.

With the right locker chosen, a triple-tier model C locker, Sessions Pilates was pleased and continued to use Hollman as their locker go-to with each additional studio location.

“We wanted our lockers to be a big focal point for the space – eye-catching, but function, giving our clients a sense of security. Each location has a different style of Hollman lockers, they all play a part in the feel and aesthetic of each location”, exclaims Brittany.

As SESSION Pilates continues to grow, Hollman is happy to be along side them as they expand. SESSION is currently located in the Dallas neighborhoods of Uptown, Lakewood, Lovers Lane, and recently the city of Plano.
