Project Insights | Parkland Moody Outpatient Center

Parkland Center’s new lockers provided by Hollman

Located in Dallas, TX, the newly built six-story, 540,000 square foot Parkland Moody Outpatient Center houses multiple physicians, treatment facilities, and a first-floor cafe. Throughout the building, Parkland needed a solution to provide employees and patients with a place to store personal belongings during their visits. By teaming up with Hollman, The Parkland Moody Outpatient Center added medical lockers in key locations throughout the hospital.

CHALLENGE

Like other hospitals, Parkland wants to provide germ-free, clean, and safe facilities for its employees and patients. They wanted their lockers to be durable, easy to use, and functional.

Medical Lockers - Laminate
SOLUTION + BENEFITS

Parkland appointed the project to McCarthy Construction, who worked together with our team of consultants to ensure the lockers created were the perfect fit for the center. The result was a combination of medical locker solutions to maximize space and increase functionality.

With the help of Hollman & McCarthy Construction, we were able to create a solution that achieved the goals set forth by Parkland. Hollman assembled two-tier model B lockers for each location in the center. The team chose a high-pressure laminate in ginger root maple to give the locker a clean finish. For easy access, we provided 5pin Key Lock. The lockers feature ADA pulls to ensure capability for all.

Location of Lockers: Moody Center for Breast Health changing rooms, Outpatient Rehab Facility, hallway lockers for staff lounge & employee lockers on the first-floor café.

              Lockers for the Hybrid Workspace

              Lockers for the Hybrid Workspace

              by Anna Zappia

Lockers are no longer just for education spaces or gyms, they are now changing the office landscape. Hollman, Inc. has manufactured more than 10 million lockers for a range of clients, from professional sports teams to tech companies. As organizations rethink their workspaces, Travis Hollman, president and CEO of the eponymous company, explained how lockers are the new office amenity.

Hollman, Inc. began in a different arena — on the court. “My dad, Joe Hollman, founded the company in 1976, making racquetball courts out of glass panels. Then, in the 1980s, we got into making lockers,” Hollman said. As the fitness craze swept the nation, Hollman, Inc. filled a need and saw an exponential growth in business. By 2006, the company was handling the construction of highly-customized locker rooms for college-level and professional sports teams, still a key sector for the company today.

Hollman noted that when he received inquiries from larger corporations he sensed that the next evolution was near. “About five years ago, banking industry clients and high-tech businesses started calling, and they have always been ahead of the curve. One of the first of these clients for us was J.P. Morgan, and they bought 3,000 lockers. It was a real eye-opener for me.”

With the rise in popularity of ride-sharing services, transportation and buildings themselves have been forever altered, and more lockers are required to accommodate this shift in lifestyle. “Parking has always been a major requirement for commercial buildings. If you had 1,700 employees, you needed at least 1,500 spots. Uber came along and the building codes changed. Companies can retain that area and repurpose all of it with open office space and lockers.”

              More Space, More Amenities

With most companies set to adopt a hybrid model in the coming year, the former parking lot areas are not being used for desks or increased office square footage, but rather amenity-rich areas designed to support the company culture and ensure employee retention. Everything from game rooms to fully-stocked eateries can be found in modern offices. Hollman explained that added space will bring even more options for staff.

“The tech companies like Google were really the first to make the office a destination, with these extra amenities. When you have a normal office, it’s difficult because you’re worried about the lease and what you’re paying per each square foot. But now that you have people working remotely and hot-desking when they do come in, there’s more offerings in the exact same space.”

Such flexibility means less furniture, however. Lockers are essential components that have replaced desks as the new storage option. “Because of the pandemic, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of people working from home, anywhere from 30 to 50 percent. It’s hard to justify keeping that 10-by- 10 office open for somebody. As we continue to embrace this flex model, employees want lockers so that they can store their personal belongings,” Hollman said.

              Personalization

In the pre-pandemic office, the desk was an employee’s central hub and place for work accessories and personal items like photos, artwork, and plants. Now that personal desks will be limited and staff will be working from home most of the week, lockers are a personal space where a person can add creative touches that make the office more interesting.

“People are personalizing their spaces, and now, when employees come into their workplace or business, the locker is the only personal space they have. Everything else is shared, so if you want to put your mark on something, that’s a great spot to do it,” Hollman said.

Made from a range of materials including wood laminate, glass, and phenolic, lockers are transformed from simple storage units to unique features. “Our acoustic lockers have a felt material on the inside that people can put pictures on. We’ve done lockers with whiteboards for brainstorming sessions or drawing pictures to foster creativity at work. You can take these add-ons and make them your own, which is key to making the user experience better.

              Data-Driven Technology

Lockers are no longer static pieces in an office or fitness center. The latest lockers can provide a seamless user experience with minimal equipment and hassle. The Vecos locker solution is keyless and can be operated easily with a smartphone or an employee’s access badge. Facilities managers can control the lockers remotely, and gain insight about usage — in real time.

Hollman noted that this access to information has been a game-changer for space-planning, and allows companies to track employee habits for greater insight into productivity. “With this new type of locking system and the mechanics, it gives management data on how many people are using the lockers, who specifically is using them, what time they came into the office, and what time they left. There is a lot of data that is being collected via the locker systems now, and that’s important because every company is data-driven. If you can implement policy effectively based on this information, it benefits your company and staff in the long term.”

              Architectural Elements

Lockers used to be an afterthought, relegated to a hallway or tucked away from the main floor. Hollman noted that lockers are main elements in offices, part of a space rather than separate pieces. “When we first started doing lockers, they used to be placed in hallways. For security reasons and ease of use, we are seeing more lockers inside the rooms where the people and desks are.”

He added that lockers increase the functionality of each work area. “With all of these open office spaces, you need breakpoints. Lockers are being used as furniture or as walls within four walls to break spaces up. They’ve become these architectural elements.”

Project Insights: Google 5 Cambridge Center Workspace Fitness Lockers

Google’s new workspace fitness lockers, provided by Hollman Lockers

              INTRODUCTION

Google wanted to expand their Cambridge Center office space to accommodate for their exponential employee growth. Google provides many different types of workspaces to best suit their 1,500+ employees. With the endless possibilities of workspaces to choose from, Google has not forgotten about their employees’ health. Google provides an on-site gym for their employees to use. Google’s design team partnered with Hollman to provide the best quality workspace fitness lockers for their employees.

“Google opened its first office in Cambridge back in 2003, and fifteen years later, we’ve grown to over 1,500 employees, working on major projects like Search, Android, Cloud, YouTube, Google Play, Research, Ads and more,” says Google Cambridge site lead Brian Cusack. “This new space will provide room for future growth and further unites our commitment to the Cambridge community. We’re proud to call this city home and will continue to support its vibrant nonprofit and growing business community.”

              CHALLENGE

The designers of Google’s Cambridge location integrated Google culture with Boston culture to create a one-of-a-kind office. According to NELSON, the goal was to create a campus that was a “truly Boston/Cambridge space, with specific nods to both.” For this reason, Google wanted to continue this theme in the locker rooms.

              SOLUTION + BENEFITS

Hollman provided a combination of models for Google’s fitness lockers. Such as double-tier model b, triple-tier model c, and four-tier model d lockers. Some come with an integrated bench. The lockers are 14W x 18D x 80H. Underneath the integrated bench, there are open cubbies for additional storage. The cubbies are 14W x 18D x 14H.

Additionally, they chose a combination of smooth and textured laminates to finish the lockers. Wilsonart Fawn Cypress, a textured laminate, was custom-ordered for this project. The smooth laminate used to break up the Fawn Cypress is by Abet Laminati.

Finally, the team chose the Keyless360 in satin-nickel from Keyless Co. Most importantly, this lock doesn’t require any keys. Instead, the Keyless360 allows the user to select a combination made up of a number and a letter.

              RESULTS

Together with Hollman Workspace Lockers‘ help, Google provided their employees with enough space to store their belongings while they hit the gym. Hollman produced over 100 lockers for this space. Additionally, the lockers fit the overall office’s theme by adding a pop of color to stand out.

Project Insights: Siemens Headquarters’ Workspace Storage Solutions

Siemens New Way of Working, with Hollman Workspace Lockers

                    INTRODUCTION

The team at Siemens was interested in creating a modern office for their employees. Siemens headquarters chose Hollman Lockers to create workspace storage solutions for their new office. They worked together with Hollman’s sales and design teams to develop a functional and flexible workspace.

Siemens has been adapting to the open-concept workspace throughout the years. In an article from 2012 about their new Orlando office, Siemens branded the term, NewWOW. Short for “New Way of Working,” the design allowed the company to trade the traditional office culture for added collaboration as it downsized its quarters. Based on the “hotel concept,” which lets employees move among desks equipped with phones and computers, the New Way of Working goes further by providing both computing power and phone service via portable laptops. It also includes workspace lockers. The lockers allow employees to stash their belongings when they’re not using them.

                    CHALLENGE

Siemens headquarters’ team laid out their goals for their new workspace. Firstly, they wanted their lockers to have a few pops of color. Secondly, to allow employees to move around freely. Thirdly, to offer a lock system that wouldn’t require a key or code.

                    SOLUTION + BENEFIT

Siemens headquarters got a high-quality product with all of the features they wanted with Hollman’s workspace lockers’ help. Hollman assembled lockers with multi-colored laminate doors. Popular colors such as red, yellow, blue, green, orange, and more add a tasteful hint of color to the white lockers. The team went with a laminate interior for a clean finishing touch.

There is a mix of two-tier and four-tier lockers. Both are the same dimensions of 15W x 24D x 72H, which provides employees with plenty of space to store their belongings. In turn, the lockers allow employees to move around freely throughout the office.

Hollman also installed a Vecos lock system on the lockers. Vecos is a smart lock that allows users to access their locker through an app on their phones. Most importantly, no keys or combination codes are required to get into their lockers. As a result, the smart locks are extremely user-friendly.

                    RESULTS

In conclusion, Hollman’s workspace lockers were the perfect solution to fit Siemens headquarters office needs. Siemens headquarters workspace lockers feature a touchless security solution provided by Vecos and a flexible storage solution provided by Hollman.

                          INTRODUCTION

PayPal’s new headquarters in the Philippines is open and ready to fill 1,000 jobs by the end of 2020. In order to add 1,000 jobs, PayPal needed to create a workspace that would meet the needs of its employees. By teaming up with Hollman Lockers, PayPal’s Philippines Headquarters office space added hundreds of workspace lockers.

                          CHALLENGE

PayPal’s team’s primary focus was to create a custom design that accommodated the needs of their 700+ employees. Firstly, they wanted their workspace lockers to include their brand colors. Secondly, to offer versatile functionality. Lastly, to allow employees the ability to move around the office for open collaboration.

                          SOLUTION + BENEFIT

The teams at Hollman and PayPal collaborated to bring PayPal’s workspace storage solution designs to life for the site of their new operations in the Philippines. The result was a combination of workspace locker solutions to maximize functionality for their 700+ employees.

For the hallways, the PayPal team chose a unique design of custom-made inset doors with laminate interiors. These workspace lockers also feature color accents with custom matching edge-banding of the PayPal brand Pantone colors.

Hollman created two-tier, laminate lockers in a white high-gloss finish. These workspace lockers offer dual functionality that serves as both a marker board and magnet for the open workspace.

Moreover, the PayPal team also requested a graduated locker configuration of custom lockers to divide the space. The configurations consisted of single-tier, double-tier, and triple-tier laminate lockers. Additionally, the division of space also serves as a social distancing barrier.

                          RESULTS

Overall, with Hollman workspace lockers‘ help, these workspace storage solutions seamlessly fit into the PayPal office space to maximize employee productivity and provide social distancing barriers. “The new office consists of rest areas, a karaoke room, a games area, and a modern cafeteria complete with built-in LED screens and sound system. To encourage teamwork and connectivity among employees, the workspace features open collaboration zones and Wi-Fi on all floors.”
