Project Insight: The University of Maryland Women’s Lacrosse & Field Hockey Locker Rooms

A look at The University of Maryland Women’s Lacrosse & Field Hockey Locker Rooms

Hollman partnered with The University of Maryland to remodel the locker rooms for the women’s lacrosse and field hockey complex, playing a pivotal role in the creation of a newly upgraded state-of-the-art facility recognized as “one of the top facilities in the entire country”.

The locker rooms have a total of 68 lockers, 42 for lacrosse and 26 for field hockey, offering storage in style that highlights Maryland’s high-profile branding. Each locker is designed to accommodate the unique needs of athletes providing space for equipment, uniforms, and personal belongings. From custom-built storage compartments to branded accessories, every detail is thoughtfully crafted to enhance both functionality and aesthetics.

One standout feature is the incorporation of a custom-actuated-integrated lighting package. This two-tone lighting setup is complemented by seamlessly integrated ambient lighting, enhancing both the aesthetics of the space and simplifying coordination. Another notable feature is the backlit lift-up storage compartment, serving a dual purpose to both store equipment and display player graphics.

The lockers showcase a custom-mounted logo, meticulously split down the middle and seamlessly integrated into the double doors. Incorporating the iconic Maryland logo not only enhances the locker room’s aesthetic appeal but also embodies team spirit. Paired with the two-tone lighting, the Maryland logo stands out, adding a dynamic focal point to the space.

While Maryland’s lockers were custom-designed to meet specific needs, they bear a striking resemblance to Hollman’s Elevate+ Series. This standardized athletic model offers a stylish appearance while ensuring athletes have a designated space to store all their gear, guaranteeing a neat and organized environment, always ready for recruits. Other Locker features include:

  • Fully integrated ventilation system
  • LED back-lit acrylic nameplate on lift-up door
  • Custom game day hook for jersey display

Project Insights: Texas Rangers Locker Room

“Our stated goal from the very beginning was to do the first next-generation ballpark” and with the help of Hollman Athletic Lockers, they did!

“Our stated goal from the very beginning was to do the first next-generation ballpark,” said Bryan Trubey, the executive vice president for HKS who oversees the sports practice for the Dallas-headquartered architecture company that designed the $1.2 billion facility. “We did not want to do a retro ballpark. That’s been done, with some incremental changes over time.” The 40,300-seat ballpark replaced the 25-year-old Globe Life Park with many new features including a 1,000-foot-long retractable roof.

Old ballparks don’t have massive videoboards towering high over right field, like the one in Globe Life Field that is about 40 feet inside the field of play and surely a potential target for a long Joey Gallo home run, though his first one didn’t hit it.

“It’s a very beautiful ballpark,” Gallo said before becoming the first player to homer in the new place when he pulled a deep drive down the right-field line. “I assumed it would be a pitcher’s park. … You can tell center field and the gaps are going to play really, really deep.”

0:45 for a look inside the Ranger’s locker room

Hollman worked with Manhattan Construction and HKS to design the main and visitor locker rooms for the Texas Rangers. Our Research and Development department collaborated with Rangers’ players, like Joey Gallo, to create the most functional custom locker solution for their team. All 42 lockers include an edge-lit, frosted acrylic divider with custom engraving, solid surface doors with engraved Texas state, and a concealed, wireless charging station. Each locker stands over eight feet tall and all the drawers and the closet in this locker are ventilated to keep their clothes and shoes fresh.

Project Insight: Auburn University Women’s Basketball Locker Room

Auburn University’s women’s basketball renovated their locker room with the help of Hollman Lockers to create a unique personal space for players.

Hollman partnered with Auburn University’s women’s basketball to upgrade their locker room with a redesign. Hollman is no stranger to Auburn, renovating the current men’s basketball locker room and creating the previous women’s basketball locker room back in 2019 (seen below).

Auburn women’s basketball’s new head coach, Johnnie Harris, wanted the players to have their own personal space and a place to recover post-game and practice. Players spend countless hours in the practice facility and locker room, so it is crucial for them to have adequate space and storage for their belongings. Coach Harris wanted a locker design similar to the men’s basketball lockers equipped with a lot of technology and sustainable elements.

Hollman partnered with GMC sports architecture for the design. Through collaboration with Gregory Forthofer, the Athletic Director of Facilities for Auburn, and Rachel Stiver from GMC, we created a new locker room that achieved Coach Harris’ goals.

The new layout includes two separate sections of the lounge for the players. The first section is an open space for players, coaches, staff, and recruits to relax, review film and collaborate. The second section was designed for restoring and recovering including the locker room and vanities.

The 17 custom-designed lockers are made of primarily Solid Surface, a durable and pore-less material designed for impact and longevity. Additional materials include custom acrylic panels and laminate.

Creating a recovery space is nothing without equipping players with the ultimate amenities and accessories. Players can relax in heated zero-gravity massage chairs, charge their phones or tablets and store personals in their private lock boxes.

Technology upgrades include integrating TVs, LED lighting that turns on when the locker is open and off when the locker is closed. Custom halo-lit “AU” logo that adds a unique glow effect inside the locker perfect for recruits and game day photos.

Players will have the ability to charge any device due to the power USB duplex. Two perforated drawers for shoes allow airflow, and the locker has a ventilation system to prevent odors and reduce bacteria. Lastly, we did custom hangers with “tiger eyes” engraved in the stainless steel hangers for players to display their uniforms on.

Our process made it easy to reach our goal to make the lockers big enough for players to be comfortable and have enough space for all their items. “This space has been designed to provide a relaxing environment while also harnessing the energetic atmosphere necessary before a game” (GMC article).

With the project complete, Auburn’s women’s basketball team is ready for the season equipped with the ideal locker room for before and after games.

        • 17 player lockers

Project Insight: Georgia Tech University – Michael K. Anderson Renovation

Georgia Tech University’s Men and Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field teams received a new student-athlete building, including impressive locker rooms.

At the beginning of 2023, Georgia Tech unveiled the Michael K. Anderson Building to their track and field/cross country teams. The $2.8 million dollar project provided the teams and coaches with a newly renovated space with a place to lounge, train, and recover.

The remodel included new locker room renovations for the players and coaches to prepare them for their upcoming season. With a sport that requires minimal gear, the goal was to provide a locker layout with ample space for storing uniforms. Behind the locker’s door, athletes will find a fully exposed interior providing loads of hanging space and dedicated shoe drawers.

Each locker is equipped with an integrated bench with a lower pull-out drawer for additional uniform or personal storage.  The design optimizes space within the locker room, giving the team an area to socialiaze and meet without feeling too crowded.

The design is a classic look, complimenting their football and basketball teams‘ locker room renovations, both constructed by Hollman.

              Locker Highlights:

              • Personal lockbox with USB charging capabilities
              • Marine Grade Vinyl integrated bench
              • Lower pull-out drawer with Aluminum grille for ventilation
              • Toe Kick LED Lighting
              • Built-in cleat shelves
              • Ample hanging space for uniforms

Project Insight: Wake Forest University Men and Women’s Basketball

Wake Forest University’s Men and Women Basketball unveiled their newly constructed clubhouses with upgraded locker rooms by Hollman, Inc.

Wake Forest University unveiled their newly constructed Chris Paul Family Men’s Basketball and Dr. Caryl Guth Women’s Basketball Clubhouses this past September. The new Clubhouses’ expansions include upgraded locker rooms that are more than double their current club spaces. One of the primary goals of their clubhouse expansion was to create a locker room that was not only attractive to recruits but a more inclusive environment for current players.

Wake Forest University is no stranger to Hollman Lockers; already renovating multiple locker rooms through us. Wake Forest’s Associate Athletic Director, Craig Zakrzewski, and University Planning and Construction Sr. Project Manager, Jill Perry, visited Hollman’s headquarters in Irving, TX. The group included Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce’s President, Ken McDaniel, and Vannoy & Sons Construction Company, Inc.’s General Contractor, Jon-Michael Broyles.

Their visitation included a manufacturing tour and a review of the mock-ups for the Men and Women’s future lockers with our athletics team. By doing this, Wake Forest could see Hollman’s full manufacturing capabilities as well as discover concepts that were later added to their design. With this hands-on approach, the members could get a vision of what the locker room could be and work with our experts to make changes, adaptations, and additions to ensure the lockers fulfill student-athlete needs.

The lockers are comprised of primarily black Nanolam and Solid Surface materials with the Acrylic Pocket Doors that are back painted with the school’s “Demon Deacon” and “Wake Forest” verbiage displayed across the lockers as added team spirit. The teams did not mess around when it came to customization pieces that truly lit up the room – literally. The lockers include RGB LED lighting displayed throughout the locker including continuous toe-kick lighting underneath the locker and backlit acrylic shelves that can be seen when the locker interior is exposed.

The Men and Women’s lockers include 43’ inch commercial cloud-based displays above each locker, ideal for player personalization and team graphics. Behind the concealing doors, players can find interior hanging space that includes a ventilation slot to drop down drying time, three shelves for easy access storage, a lockable shelf accented with gold felt liner and a wireless charging station.

The key difference between the two locker rooms is the lower section of the locker where the soft-closing cleat drawer is placed. It was determined that the men’s team required more space in the drawer for storage while the women’s team opted for a seating option. The women’s locker includes integrated seating with marine-grade vinyl cushions; the drawer is conveniently located underneath and can be accessed through the cushion.

With the clubhouses complete, the student-athletes are fully equipped for their upcoming season and through Hollman’s design efforts, both teams have a locker room that is made for lasting impressions and team celebrations.

Project Insights: Michigan State University Munn Ice Arena

Munn Ice Arena renovations give Spartan Hockey a world-class arena with the help of Hollman Lockers

Home of Michigan State University’s Spartan Hockey team, Munn Ice Arena, has completed its largest renovation to date. After breaking ground in 2019, the renovation was halted due to the pandemic, now four years later, the hockey facility has gotten its much needed facelift.

When it came to the locker room renovations for the Spartans, one of the primary drives of the restoration was to create a space for the players to bond and to promote fellowship. Not only was space within the locker room necessary, but the lockers themselves needed to handle the large and heavy equipment involved with hockey.

Hollman came into the picture, presenting a locker that was designed for MSU based on current player habits and needs. Having the locker room located in an ice arena, it was important to ensure the lockers were durable against the environment. The main component of the lockers were created with black Phenolic, a notoriously durable and water-resistant material; while the integrated benches were made with marine-grade vinyl cushions constructed to withstand water. Using these products will guarantee the lockers stay pristine even with heavy use.

Along with durability, the lockers were strategically designed to shelf and hang the necessary pieces of gear without overloading the unit. In general, hockey requires a lot of gear for protective purposes, meaning the design needed to be able to categorize a large volume.

Each locker includes three tiers of shelving made to hold helmets, all pads, gloves, and personal items. Below each integrated seat is a lift-up piece for additional storage. One of the unique features of the model is the face-mounted custom skate hooks placed on the lower portion of the locker, designed to keep skates obscured and localized in front of the lower ventilation system to help reduce dry time and bacterial growth.

“The thought process to have a changing area where each guy has their own space to put their stuff in so we can keep our locker room orderly, and that’s one thing we talked about as a group. Its super important to us to be a steward of that space…we can say thank you but I think the way you take care of it is the best way to show you appreciate it so that place is going be spotless”, Adam Nightingale, MSU Hockey Head Coach.

Renovations to Munn Ice Arena were completed this past September, just in time for the Spartan’s regular season. With the facility’s upgrades and the help of Hollman, alums and players are sure to be proud for years to come.
