Retrofit: Hollman Inc. Foundation Helps Deserving Schools in Need of Locker Room Renovation

The 2022 winner of the Hollman Helps Locker Room Renovation program was Norte Vista High School in Riverside, Calif.

Featured in Retrofit Magazine, The Hollman Family Foundation is a Texas-based foundation partnering with deserving schools to upgrade their athletic locker room facilities. Founded by Travis and Stephanie Hollman of Hollman Inc., a provider of locker designs and solutions, the foundation believes that all benefit when given the opportunity and tools to plan for the future.

The school’s locker room facilities were in need of a major overhaul; there was no air conditioning, a leaking ceiling, and damaged lockers. Norte Vista’s football coach, Ken Batdorf, has been at the school for over 25 years and as a result of his program, many of the students consider their school and team a second home. The result of Hollman’s overhaul was a fully renovated locker room outfitted with custom-built Hollman lockers in the school’s very own colors.

Project Insight: Wake Forest University Men and Women’s Basketball

Wake Forest University’s Men and Women Basketball unveiled their newly constructed clubhouses with upgraded locker rooms by Hollman, Inc.

Wake Forest University unveiled their newly constructed Chris Paul Family Men’s Basketball and Dr. Caryl Guth Women’s Basketball Clubhouses this past September. The new Clubhouses’ expansions include upgraded locker rooms that are more than double their current club spaces. One of the primary goals of their clubhouse expansion was to create a locker room that was not only attractive to recruits but a more inclusive environment for current players.

Wake Forest University is no stranger to Hollman Lockers; already renovating multiple locker rooms through us. Wake Forest’s Associate Athletic Director, Craig Zakrzewski, and University Planning and Construction Sr. Project Manager, Jill Perry, visited Hollman’s headquarters in Irving, TX. The group included Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce’s President, Ken McDaniel, and Vannoy & Sons Construction Company, Inc.’s General Contractor, Jon-Michael Broyles.

Their visitation included a manufacturing tour and a review of the mock-ups for the Men and Women’s future lockers with our athletics team. By doing this, Wake Forest could see Hollman’s full manufacturing capabilities as well as discover concepts that were later added to their design. With this hands-on approach, the members could get a vision of what the locker room could be and work with our experts to make changes, adaptations, and additions to ensure the lockers fulfill student-athlete needs.

The lockers are comprised of primarily black Nanolam and Solid Surface materials with the Acrylic Pocket Doors that are back painted with the school’s “Demon Deacon” and “Wake Forest” verbiage displayed across the lockers as added team spirit. The teams did not mess around when it came to customization pieces that truly lit up the room – literally. The lockers include RGB LED lighting displayed throughout the locker including continuous toe-kick lighting underneath the locker and backlit acrylic shelves that can be seen when the locker interior is exposed.

The Men and Women’s lockers include 43’ inch commercial cloud-based displays above each locker, ideal for player personalization and team graphics. Behind the concealing doors, players can find interior hanging space that includes a ventilation slot to drop down drying time, three shelves for easy access storage, a lockable shelf accented with gold felt liner and a wireless charging station.

The key difference between the two locker rooms is the lower section of the locker where the soft-closing cleat drawer is placed. It was determined that the men’s team required more space in the drawer for storage while the women’s team opted for a seating option. The women’s locker includes integrated seating with marine-grade vinyl cushions; the drawer is conveniently located underneath and can be accessed through the cushion.

With the clubhouses complete, the student-athletes are fully equipped for their upcoming season and through Hollman’s design efforts, both teams have a locker room that is made for lasting impressions and team celebrations.

        In Loving Memory: Joe Hollman

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Joe Hollman, founder of Hollman Inc. and Keyless.Co. Joe passed away surrounded by family at his home in Dallas, Texas on January 26, 2023.

A Portland, Oregon native, Joe Hollman was a natural innovator and pioneer of the locker industry. He often summed up his goals with one sentence – “reach out and touch perfection in something you love to do.”

Joe was known for his many extraordinary adventures in life. After serving as a US Army Platoon Leader in Vietnam, he left the military with only $3,000 in his pocket that he won from a card game. Upon returning to Oregon, he began working as a home builder. After completing 500 homes, developing 100+ acres of land, and 20+ acres of commercial property, Joe learned and appreciated the value of quality construction and carried that into his next venture.

A true problem solver, Joe combined his knowledge of building with his passion for fitness and racquetball. With just one employee building racquetball courts in Oregon, Joe founded Hollman, Inc. in 1976. This move launched Joe’s first invention, the panelized court wall system. The revolutionary panel changed how we build courts today, accounting for more than 97% of racquetball and squash courts in the US at the height of the sport. But Joe didn’t stop there. With his love for fitness, he built the first of four racquetball fitness clubs in Oregon.

Sensing a need in the industry, Hollman expanded into the locker business in 1985 and relocated the family operation to Dallas, Texas in 1991. From early on, the innovation and passion of the Hollman team were unmatched, bringing new inventions, materials, and innovative lock solutions to the locker industry. Joe’s dedication and relentless drive contributed to building Hollman, Inc. into the world’s largest manufacturer of courts and wood lockers. To date, Joe Hollman’s locker and woodworking inventions hold numerous # patents that remain the most popular locker door selection in the resort and country club industry.

Never a man to sit stagnantly, Joe then turned his attention to developing the perfect combination lock. In 2012, Joe created Keyless.Co. and released its first mechanical lock. The iconic Keyless combination lock quickly became one of the most widely used locking solutions for the fitness industry worldwide.

Throughout his life, Joe prioritized sharing his success by giving back to the community. He has funded an endowed scholarship at the University of Portland, hosted educational events, provided financial donations to Jesuit – Portland High School to help fund renovations for their athletic field and cafeteria, gifted two renovations of the Chiles Center locker rooms, and supported three orphanages in Thailand.

Joe led with a greater purpose and meaning, constantly reminding those around him that:

“There are three things we must live for: to know, love, and serve. We must work consistently to know and love ourselves and our Creator and strive to serve others, to help and support them. By this, we honor and celebrate the Creator of all that is.”

From all of us at Hollman Inc., Joe, we will miss you greatly. Your legacy will live on in our hearts and continued success of Hollman, Inc. As Joe would say – “onward and upward,” forever more.

In Lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate you honor Joe with a donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star. Donate Here https://4agc.com/donation_pages/b61e3e9b-7044-4123-a746-9bef35c0a4ec

              Revamp Your Gym for 2023

Create your gym’s identity for 2023 and start the year strong with an increase in revenue and memberships through Hollman renovations.

In the past 2 years, the pandemic has caused people to re-prioritized their health and wellness. As the world continues to go back to normalcy, gyms have continued to flourish with an increase in retention and new memberships. Gym owners must now compete for memberships through competitive pricing, exceptional equipment options and an atmosphere that attracts to users.

              BRANDING YOUR GYM

              AESTHETIC:

When designing your space, color and décor must be intentional to help build an ambiance for users. Color choices can define a space’s energy – from formal and casual to, sophisticated and urban. Art and design help the mind concentrate; consider adding pieces to your space or custom vinyl art to elevate the room and create an eye-catching space.

For Modern designs: Use natural colors, wood, and other elements found in outside. Natural lights, open spaces, and plants can elevate the design, creating a more natural appeal for members that love the outdoors.

For Contemporary designs: Use monochromatic colors such as grey and bold color statements such as branding pieces, art, or even lockers. Contemporary design can have an urban feel with textured materials or metal included in the design, color is used as an intentional contrast.

              INCREASE SECURITY:

Security is not a new topic for gym owners; it’s a concern that impacts all employees and members. No matter what type of facility you have, security should be a top priority when it comes to the gym’s design. Give your members and employees the peace of mind that comes with trusted security.

Hollman carries some of the world’s leading lock products, guaranteed to protect in any environment. From manual locks to smart lock integration, we have solutions that accommodate all settings and user activity

              ADD AMENITIES:

It’s all about amenities. When it comes down to it, many gyms are similar in the equipment carried, the members they attract, and the type of environment. What really sets two gyms apart is the amenities provided for members; having extra add-ons will increase member retention, provide convenience for users, and give a reason for members to choose your locations over others. To learn more about Hollman’s amenities, read our blog here.

              LAYOUT/SPACE:

From open layouts to foyers, a gym’s design ultimately affects how each member uses the space. Whether you carry classes or are an open-space gym, it is important to provide members with enough space to comfortably work out.

Locker room layouts are equally as important. Security and privacy are a primary focus when it comes to the design of the space; it is also important to note the flow of the space matters as well. The layout of the lockers, showers, and additional amenities should be laid out for convenience and well directed.

For renovations, Hollman can assist with design layout to create the ideal set up as well as work with your current conditions to retrofit your locker room.

              ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES:

Many of Hollman’s products help you gain LEED points. With the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED points are earned by taking steps to become more environmentally friendly. Being a sustainable building can help your business have higher value and lower operational costs. Outside of the benefits for your building, members are attracted towards companies that have green initiatives and are conscious of the environment.

Hollman actively works on maintaining and improving our green initiatives; we are proud to state that 10-20% of our materials are locally sourced and made of recycled materials. 80% of Hollman’s projects qualify for LEED points based on recycled content and low-emissions materials. You can learn more about Hollman’s sustainability here.

What your gym features can set you apart from the competition; ensure your gym is relevant and up to date on the latest trends and demands. Whether designing a new space or looking for ways to improve your gym. With Hollman, upgrade your gym with our storage and amenities solutions.

The Christmas spirit is alive and well here at Hollman Inc!

Each Holiday season, the Hollman Team adopts and supports families for Christmas through the Nonprofit Organization: Leukemia Texas.
