Excellence in Achievement

Wood – Veneer. Why it’s the better choice.

Sustainability is a core value here at Hollman, and we hold our work to the utmost quality and craftsmanship. Our environment and use of resources heavily influence our decisions in the material. To ensure we get the most of the product, we use wood – veneer (veneer). Don’t let the name fool you; veneer is anything less of a cheap alternative to solid wood.

Let’s start with the basics – the most common misconception is that veneer is not “real” wood. Contrary to popular belief, it is 100% wood, the only difference being veneer is very thin slices of the tree vs. large chunks. The thin slices of wood are then bonded to planks of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) to create a stable substrate which poses multiple benefits to using a solid piece of wood. Solid doors expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, and over time this will cause the center panel to shift, exposing unfinished wood. With veneer, this factor is close to obsolete. Veneer doors will not warp, fade, expand or contract.

Another fantastic benefit to veneer is that it is environmentally friendly! We can produce 20 veneer panels with 1 log vs. only one panel with solid wood. Having this ability with veneer allows an increased yield from each tree, conserving natural resources while maintaining the natural aesthetics. They are incredibly safe for the environment: Only 3% Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are emitted into the air instead of 80% VOCs emitted with traditional lacquer and varnishes. Resulting in healthier locker rooms that are 100% anti-microbial and 100% formaldehyde-free. VOC’s, like formaldehyde found in lacquers, contribute to the production of ozone, which affects normal lung function according to EPA studies.

Feedback this year from our customers was focused on member and employee wellness.  Our most exciting update based on customer feedback is providing our antimicrobial material solution, Nanloam, in all locker interiors.  This smart material helps resist the growth and spread of mold and bacteria.  

With functionality central to our design method, we created a locker that helps your members optimize their personal space. Our team incorporated an optional tennis racket and golf club holder as well as a frosted acrylic tray to help promote an organization.  And we have also added modern, optional amenities to the locker that include touchless lock technology solutions and embed, wireless, USB cell phone charging surface. These are just a few of many more options to come as we want our customers to truly create a space that truly reflects their club and members.

        Wood Veneer Lockers that Set the New Gold Standard

        At Hollman, we are known for our craftsmanship of wood veneer lockers, which is why BoardRoom Magazine named Hollman Locker Room Firm of the Year 4 years in a row.

        Our ability to design and directly manufacture lockers in our Irving, Texas warehouse has given us the capability to find the most innovative solutions and designs for our customers. Our dedicated in-house woodworking and custom stain shop also allow us the flexibility to provide the customer with lockers that are custom matched to their environment.

        Over the last 44 years, we continue to improve our veneer locker methods by implementing new woodworking technology. Perfecting our methods starts with our selection of premium grade wood veneer. Our veneer has a solid, stable medium density fiberboard (MDF) with a concealed core. These features help provide a better solution over solid wood as it helps your locker avoid warping, contracting, or expanding over time. We know this solution is crucial which is why we incorporate it on all locker doors and end panels.

        To create the perfect color consistency and grain Hollman uses premium logs for cut and production. In addition to that, our automated stain process guarantees 99% less yellowing than traditional lacquer.

        Our stain process provides a consistent look other companies have difficulty achieving while ensuring our veneer lockers are the most sustainable and durable option available on the market. We use a UV finish on all locker doors to create a more durable locker that is antimicrobial and formaldehyde-free over competitor lockers stained with pre-catalyzed lacquers.

        We understand that your lockers should be built to withstand everyday wear and tear over time which is why, with our manufacturing capabilities, we are one of the only manufacturers offering 1-inch thick locker doors. To enhance your member’s experience, complete your locker with modern amenities including USB device charging, integrated lighting, and compartmentalized custom storage.
