solid wood

Veneer Vs. Solid Wood. Are you choosing the right material for your locker?

When designing a locker, Hollman wants to make sure you select the right material to enhance your locker room’s aesthetics, meet your functional needs, and remain durable throughout time. With over 45 years of manufacturing wood lockers, our experienced team will ensure you make the right decision for your locker room needs.

Let’s start with understanding the differences between solid wood and veneer:

Solid Wood

  • Advantages
    • Solid wood is durable and easy to repair. These include scratches, dents & stains. However, the worse the damage, the more expensive it will be to repair, but it is still repairable.
    • Solid wood is the best material to create cabinet frames, furniture legs, and other dimensional features.
  • Disadvantages
    • When exposed to different temperatures and humidity, it will expand or contract and may split along the grain of the wood. Warping and twisting are also a result of changes to the environment.
    • Tree Size limitations can limit your selection. Trees do not grow large enough to produce a wide enough board. To compensate for the limitation, edge lamination must occur, which creates weak points in the material.

Veneer

  • Advantages
    • It’s environmentally friendly! We can produce 20 veneer panels with 1 log vs only 1 panel with solid wood. Having this ability with veneer allows an increased yield from each tree, conserving natural resources while maintaining the natural aesthetics.
    • Veneer creates new design possibilities. Veneer panels are thin and bonded to a substrate, allowing designs that are not possible with solid wood.
    • Stable Substrate. The technique on how veneer is bonded to medium-density fiberboard creates a stable substrate. The stability produces surfaces that are not prone to warp, split, or seasonal movement.
  • Disadvantages
    • It’s thin. It is easy to sand through a veneer layer during fabrication, making it challenging to repair.  However, at Hollman, our skilled craftsmanship uses innovative technology, allowing for durable bonding to its substrate.
